The great garden renovation: The upper wall

The great garden renovation: The upper wall

Days 4 through 7

So the first part of the week was spent digging up the plants and removing the old garden structure. Finally, on day four with no more space to hold a single rock or containers to put another plant, we decide to free up some deck by building the top retaining wall. That will also help in estimating how much rock is needed for the whole project. Given the small size of the backyard it is better to build in stages. Once we finish using up the existing rock, we will have room to get more. It is also quite motivating to start the building. The garden is taking shape!

Ok, that is interesting… we used almost all of the rock we have on the upper wall. Looks like we will need about twice what I was originally thinking we would need. I am also thinking about using larger rocks for the lower wall as there will be a lot of soil for that wall to hold up.

The next couple of days are spent planning for materials for the lower wall and rock stairs. Delivery is expensive. The amount of rock we need is too much for my car to tow. So we will have to rent a moving truck. This is a lot of organizing given my current state of mind. I seem to resist strenuous thinking or talking to people lately and this activity is pushing my limits. My Doctor and counsellor are encouraging these activities to help me get back on my feet.

I take a bit of time to plant a few strawberry plants in the crevices in the rock wall and to check on my plants in their bags. They are doing lovely.
