The great garden renovation: digging the pond

After a short rest, we spend a couple of days shoveling soil back into the garden and getting rid of some of the mountains of soil on the deck. I finish setting up the top of the waterfall and bury the spill way. Now that all of the boulders have been placed and we are moving some of the soil up, we can actually move around the deck a bit. We clean it up a little and place some chairs where we can sit and admire our work. We move some of the plants in their pots, bags and baskets, to the finished upper garden. It is fun to start to plan where to place them, although we are not quite ready to plant them yet. First we must finish the lower garden. We need to make the shade bed, dig the pond and bog garden, and shape the sun bed around the end of the pond. It is still a lot of work. We are only half way there.

Before we put in the pond, we need to remove a few boards from the end of the deck. And then more digging. The soil is really compact and there is a lot of clay so it is slow going. I have a little helper though, so I cannot complain. This is a great family project.
