Memoir – Friday Fictioneers – May 20, 2022

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

The following 100 word story was written for the Friday Fictioneers challenge hosted by https://rochellewisoff.com/ using the above photo as a story prompt.

The house is quiet. The kids are at school and Mike at work. I stare at the screen in front of me, full of possibility. Stories unwritten float around my mind like leaves in a fall windstorm. Plots not quite formed and new beginnings, hazy like mist rising from the earth as the warm sun hits the fresh morning dew. I leave the computer off, reaching instead for a fresh stack of paper and my favorite pen. I look at the photo on the wall. My pen touches paper and I begin: It was my dream to cross Lake Erie.

  1. Lovely, particularly the fresh paper and pen – nothing like that feeling 🙂

    • Angie

      Thank you! I agree

  2. I like how you settle into a moment of peace and quiet, before taking some paper and a favourite pen. I sense moments of ritual and routine that allows inspiration to develop.

    • Angie

      Thank you

  3. Those first words are always the hardest. Also the last words. And the ones in the middle too

    • Angie

      Haha! All true!

  4. Lovely Story. Is Lake Eerie a real place?

    • Amanda, I grew up near Lake Erie and never thought of it as Lake Eerie, but more as Lake Cheery — and boring. But you’ve given me an idea for a story! Thanks!

    • Angie

It should have been Lake Erie- oops!

  5. This has a lovely gentle pace – I feel as though I’m with the MC moment by moment as she settles down and prepares to start writing. Very good.

  6. Dear Angie,

You might guess I’m an avid swimmer so I related well to the last line. Sometimes good old longhand works best, doesn’t it? Love this story.

    Shalom,

    Rochelle

To write and travel, the best of all worlds, sadly both are denied in many countries
